Bureaucrats the world over aren’t exactly renowned for their fashion sense, so it comes as no surprise to see that this summer’s “Super Cool Biz” campaign, which was recently launched by the Japanese Environment Ministry, is a sartorial disaster.

Judging by photos from the launch show, it seems Cool Biz committee members were heavily inspired by Magnum, P.I. and the Tour de France. Pedal pushers, Hawaiian shirts and sandals take pride of place.

It will be interesting to see just how many people take Super Cool Biz to heart. Tokyo’s daytime temperatures are currently in the high twenties (ºC), but most guys are still dressing very conservatively. There are fewer ties, but a lot of dark suits remain.
