Few engineers can claim to have changed the way we make and build things, but Isambard Kingdom Brunel was one of them. Portsmouth-born Brunel, like his father, was a natural engineer, and after serving his apprenticeship in France he returned to Britain to work on his first major project, the Thames Tunnel.

The Thames Tunnel would have been a career-defining point for most men, but Brunel was different: at the age of just twenty-four he won the contract to build the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Sadly, he died before the bridge was completed.

It would take a number of very lengthy essays for me to detail his feats in depth, so it’s probably best if I direct you to this biography of him, which is very good indeed. And for your viewing pleasure I’ll leave you with some rather spiffing photos of his work.
